Since 2007, The Kigamboni Community Center (KCC) has been addressing local poverty and health issues by providing quality education to underprivileged children, offering a second chance to those without access to public education.
History
The Kigamboni Community Centre was born when Festo, Kondo, Nassoro and George came together with friends, who after suffering from parental abuse, lack of education and homeless childhoods, wanted to give back to the community that helped them grow into respectable adults despite the everyday challenges they faced. Of the 100% volunteer-driven Board of Directors of KCC, most of them contribute the success and quality of life they’ve achieved with being saved by a community centre similar to the one they operate today. With this in mind, and noting the vast number of youth around them who do not have a similar opportunity, they decided to dedicate themselves to this cause with the hope that sooner or later, every child in the region where they grew up will have the chance to overcome these daily challenges and become happy, proud and healthy adults.
With a lot of work, sacrifice and determination, they started teaching what they could to local children in the nearest available shelter. In time, they secured access to an abandoned government building which houses the centre today, and as their pupils began to learn more and dedicate themselves to their education and community, the concept of a viable and sustainable community centre became more and more a reality and a dream. In 2009, KCC obtained official recognition as a registered not-for-profit organization in Tanzania and offers services to hundreds of community members on a daily basis. As of today, KCC continues growing with a vision of becoming a hub for the economic and social development of the entire local community.
MISSION
Kigamboni is one of the most popular neighbourhoods of Dar es Salaam, the commercial capital and biggest city in Tanzania. As the region grows quickly with an explosive birth rate and a consistent flow of immigrants from all over the country, the need for social and community based services is becoming more important than ever.
The attractiveness of the area can be partially explained by Kigamboni's proximity to the economic centre of the country, while it still remains isolated from urban turbulence (it is separated from the city by a 10 minute ferry ride across the mouth of Dar es Salaam harbour). Adding to the magnitude of the phenomenon are its closeness to one of the finest beaches in the region, the local abundance of minerals and fish, as well as its access point to one of the most popular touristic attractions around, Zanzibar island.
What seems at first an ideal situation is actually a double-edged sword: the demand for public and community-based social services to address poverty, education and health problems is evolving, while the domestic resources available to resolve this difficult situation must be diluted among a population growing every day.
